Apps

PhotoSweeper 2.0

Smartphones make it a little too easy to take a ton of photos. My biggest problem is that I take too many shots of the same photo without ever going back and picking the best one. PhotoSweeper 2.0's aim is to help fix that problem. It can scan your library and group similar ones together so that you can eliminate the ones where your eyes are closed or someone isn't smiling. It supports iPhoto, Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, as well as folder based image libraries.

TextExpander 5

Smile Software has released version 5 of TextExpander. TextExpander is one of those apps that I immediately miss when I'm at a Mac other than my own. TextExpander saves you time and effort by expanding short abbreviations into frequently-used text and pictures. Version 5 includes some new features that I'm enjoying.

CloudConvert

CloudConvert is one of the tools that I'm simply thankful it exists. It's a web based tool that can convert anything to anything. Do you have an ePub than you want to be in Kindle format? It can do it. Do you have some FLAC files that you want in AAC? CloudConvert is your tool. With nothing to install, it's incredibly easy to use. Since it's a web based system, it's not relying on your computer hardware in order to convert. This means it potentially can move a lot faster without slowing down your local machine.

DataMan Next

I've been testing out DataMan Next for the past few days, and I'm pretty impressed with how it works. It's tracking cellular usage on your iPhone without the use of proxy connections to determine how close you are to your data quota.

iFlicks 2

We wrote about the original iFlicks a few years ago. It has since been replaced by iFlicks 2. iFlicks 2 is my favorite app for converting movies and TV shows while also embedding metadata, artwork, and subtitles.

Wi-Fi Signal

WiFi Signal is a really handy app to have running on your Mac. It sits in the menu bar and gives constant updates about the health of your Wi-Fi signal. It will let you know your signal strength, data rate, channel recommendations, and much more. It's only $.99, so there is no reason not to check it out. This is especially helpful when checking signal strength at various parts of your house.

Fantastical 2 for Mac

I've used every version of Fantastical for every platform since 1.0 was released. I've never thought that the stock Apple apps were that great, and Fantastical is built for exactly how I use my calendar. With version 2.0 for the Mac, Flexibits has changed the game once again.

Alfred

Our sister site, The Sweet Setup, picked Alfred as their favorite OS X launcher. They choose Alfred due to is ability to incorporate different features from its competitors and implement them in a distinctive, easy, and understandable way — all while offering more power for advanced users to take things further. It also offers a unique iOS companion app and has features like Workflows that allow you to be more efficient you stay productive.

Blink: Better Affiliate Links

Blink is a new iOS app for making affiliate links from the iTunes Store, App Store, and the iBook store. Blink includes an extension that makes it simple to generate links from within the stores and anywhere else you find links. Blink can also create affiliate links as plain links or using various Markdown formats.

Magzter Gold

Do you love magazines? If so, Magzter Gold might be a service that you want to check out. It's an all you can eat subscription for magazines. For only $9.99 per month, you can read everything they offer. They have a decent selection (2000+). After telling the app what kind of magazines I liked, I was recommended ESPN, Inc, MacLife and Fast Company. They have compiled a list of what magazines are included in the Gold subscription.

RunKeeper

Our sister site, The Sweet Setup, picked RunKeeper as their favorite running app for the iPhone. While a lot of runners prefer watches with dedicated GPS units — like this one — the iPhone makes for a great alternative. There are a lot of run-tracking apps, but RunKeeper is our favorite running app due to its deep feature set, vibrant community, and strong integration with other services. I've tracked over 400 runs with it, and even after spending time with a host of other applications, RunKeeper stands apart.
