Pre-order ‘Maangchi’s Big Book of Korean Cooking’ by Emily Kim

It's been a little over a year since I first stumbled across Emily “Maangchi” Kim’s YouTube channel, along with her first cookbook from 2015, Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking.

Here's how I described her videos at the time:

She’s an absolutely charming lady who teaches you how to cook authentic Korean recipes. The New York Times once described her as “YouTube’s Korean Julia Child”, which is perfect.

Her videos are delightful, totally relaxing yet informative, and her various offhand comments and video captions will often make me laugh out loud, like the part of one video where she’s quietly describing the kimchi pork bun she just baked and then says, “…Why am I whispering to you?”

I've loved watching her videos ever since, and yesterday she announced that she has a second, even bigger cookbook coming out in October: Maangchi's Big Book of Korean Cooking, which will have 150 all-new, user-friendly recipes across 13 chapters, with even more photos and useful info for you to learn from:

From the book description:

The book contains the favorite dishes Maangchi has perfected over the years, from Korean barbecue and fried chicken to bulgogi and bibimbap. It explores topics not covered in other Korean cookbooks, from the vegan fare of Buddhist mountain temples to the inventive snacks of street vendors to the healthful, beautiful lunch boxes Korean mothers make for their kids. Maangchi has updated and improved the traditional dishes, without losing their authentic spirit.

Among the features:

  • Spectacular party food, from homemade clear rice liquor to sweet, spicy, sour baby back ribs
  • Side plates that support and complement every Korean meal
  • Soups, hotpots, and stews, from bone broth to tofu stews
  • An array of different kimchis
  • A detailed photographic chapter on Korean cooking techniques

On her website, Maangchi explains that anyone who pre-orders the book will be eligible for special gifts:

You will get an ultimate Korean grocery shopping list I made so you can print it out or keep it on your smartphone. It will be very helpful because you will see where to find ingredients in the store, what to choose, and the English, Korean, and romanized names for everything. It will make your shopping much easier. I’ll also send you 2 sample recipes from the book before anyone else gets them!

Just fill out the form on my publisher’s website and add your receipt. Important note: the page says it’s only open to US and Canadian residents, but that’s just legal stuff. If you preordered the book just go ahead and fill out the form. ; )

Maangchi’s Big Book of Korean Cooking comes out on October 29th, 2019. Looking forward to it!
