8BitDo DIY — Bluetooth Mod Kits for Retro Gaming Controllers
If you're the type of gamer who's been clinging onto your favorite console(s) since you were a kid, or if you're someone who collects retro gaming stuff, you'll dig the 8BitDo DIY line of controller mod kits. They let you convert those old controllers into rechargable, Bluetooth-compatible ones, allowing you to use them for playing wirelessly with Windows, macOS, Raspberry Pi, Nintendo Switch, and more.
The best part is how easy the kits are to install. No soldering is required. You just have to open your controller of choice, swap out its circuit board for the 8BitDo one, then close the shell again. Each kit comes with all the tools you need to get the job done, including a screwdriver and USB charging cable. Once installed, your controller will sport LED indicators to show what mode your controller is in, along with its battery life.
They've got five kits to choose from, depending on what controller you want to mod (each kit is $20):
- NES — [How-to video]
- NES Classic Edition — [How-to video]
- SNES/SFC — [How-to video for SNES version]
- SNES/SFC Classic Edition — [How-to video for Super Famicom version]
- Sega Mega Drive — [How-to video]
