‘Quests of Yore: Barley’s Edition’ is Now Available

I first wrote about Disney and Pixar’s Quests of Yore: Barley’s Edition back in September 2020, when it was only up for pre-order. It was slated to release the following February, but I guess it sold out immediately or something because, no matter how often I checked back over the ensuing months, it was always out of stock.

It wasn’t until I published our 2021 Christmas Catalog the other day that I finally discovered the game was once again available for purchase. I’d always wanted to do a follow-up post to let people know about its release, because I still think it’s such a neat way for kids to dip their toes into the world of tabletop role-playing games. And well, here we are.

Fans of the film Onward already know this, but in case you need a refresher, Quests of Yore is the Dungeons & Dragons-style game that the film’s story is centered around, with fantastical creatures, magic spells, and adventures galore.

In fact, Barley’s Edition was designed to feel like it was ripped straight from the movie and placed in your hands, with all of Barley’s notes, tips, and drawings found throughout its contents. You get to experience the game exactly as the film’s protagonists would, which is super special.

In the game, you get to create your own character, with your choice of species (elf, centaur, troll, etc), starting gear, techniques, reputation, and approaches. One player takes on the role of the Quest Master (QM), guiding the other members of the fellowship through every step of their adventures together.
