Limelight for iPhone

Limelight for iPhone is a gorgeous new app for tracking movies. You can list movies in two ways: “Watched” and “To Watch”. Pretty self-explanatory there. You can rate movies on the “Watched” list, and it will display them in order of rating. Both libraries appear as shelves of beautiful movie artwork, as you can see in the first panel below: Adding movies…

Skyfall on Blu-Ray

Skyfall, the twenty-third in a long line of fantastic James Bond movies—and the third one starring Daniel Craig—has garnered over a billion dollars worldwide, making it the 7th-highest grossing film of all time. It has maintained a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% since its release, and Roger Moore has even declared Daniel Craig to be the best Bond. Clearly the franchise is…

‘The Amazing Spiderman’ on Blu-Ray

The Amazing Spiderman is out on Blu-Ray next week, bringing the Web Slinger’s reboot to a living room near you. Peter Parker’s origin story is re-told in what many to believe a much better way than it was back in the early 2000s when Tobey Maguire was in the suit. The Blu-Ray includes deleted scenes, commentaries, screen tests and stunt rehearsals. It…

The Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu-ray

The trilogy ships on December 4, and is available for pre-order now. This edition comes with all three films, as well as bonus material and The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy. Warner Brothers will be releasing The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition in early 2013, though, so if you’re a big Batman fan, waiting might be the best…

Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures [Blu-Ray]

Indiana Jones is coming to Blu-Ray. This 5-disc set includes all four Indiana Jones movies, even though Kingdom of the Crystal Skull doesn’t count. That’s 481 minutes of adventure and extra content like interviews, special introductions and more. The box set is due out on September 18, 2012. Pre-order it today!

The Hunger Games 2-Disc Blu-ray Set

Regardless of your age, it’s hard to deny that The Hunger Games books were a huge cultural phenomenon. Everyone was reading them and commenting on the trilogy that follows heroine Katniss Everdeen on the adventure of a lifetime that ends in a world-changing event. The first film is out on Blu-ray. The two-disc set includes the film, interviews, and loads of extra…

The Bourne Trilogy on Blu-ray

With The Bourne Legacy opening in theaters this weekend, there’s no better time to catch up on the Bourne trilogy. The Blu-ray collection is currently 50% off for Amazon Prime members, making it just $28. The collection comes packed with deleted scenes, alternate endings, interviews and more.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Soundtrack

If you enjoy epic and instrumental soundtracks, you’ll enjoy the latest work by Hans Zimmer: the original motion picture soundtrack for The Dark Knight Rises. Zimmer, who is the leader of the film music division at DreamWorks studios, has composed the musical accompaniment for all three of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films.

The Godfather Trilogy: The Coppola Restoration

Two of the greatest movies ever made, and then, well, who knows what happened for Part III. Right now the trilogy bundle is on sale on iTunes for just $18. It’s not HD, but it is cheap. And, in a way, watching these movies in their original, standard definition almost seems like the way it should be. Or, if you do prefer…

The Adventures of Tintin

Directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson, The Adventures of Tintin, is an adventure story about a boy and his dog on their quest to uncover hidden treasure. This is one that Anna and I never got to see in the theatre. It’s available now to rent or own, and so the Blu-Ray version in the queue for our next…

Hugo

Okay, okay. I admit, I’m lousy at writing out reviews for movies. But that won’t stop me from recommending a good flick when it comes across my living room, and Hugo is one of those. I saw it in the theater and rented it again with Anna on Blu-Ray and loved it both times. It’s fun, it’s well written, and the cinematography…

The Help

Another one of Anna’s and my favorite movies from 2011 was The Help. The movie is well directed, well written, and well acted. It’s based on the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett, and it tells the story of the tensions and difficulties between housewives and maids in the small town of Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. (Also available on iTunes.)

Moneyball

Based on a true story about the Oakland A’s, spreadsheets, and the business of baseball, Moneyball is a great film. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are fantastic together; it’s no doubt why they are nominated for the Golden Globe awards of best actor and best supporting actor respectively. (Also available on iTunes.)

Band of Brothers & The Pacific: Combo Set

Band of Brothers is one of the most powerful, eye-opening, well-done TV miniseries I have ever seen. Better than any movie I have seen, Band of Brothers attempts gives an honest look at what it was like to serve during World War II as it follows the story of Easy Company and is based on interviews of the men who actually served.…

Super 8

Written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, Super 8 was one of my favorite movies of 2011. Like a combination of E.T. and The Goonies (but with lens flare and CGI), Super 8 was both suspenseful and playful. (Also available on iTunes.)

Samsung 3D Blu-ray Disc Player

No doubt about it, Samsung makes fantastic home electronics. I have a Samsung television and it’s fantastic. I would have bought a Samsung Blu-ray player but I couldn’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on something I don’t use that often. Well, I’m kicking myself now because this top-of-the-line Blu-ray player (which also supports 3D Blu-ray) is on fire sale at Amazon for…

Captain America: The First Avenger

Marvel’s comic book movies have been hit and miss. Some are stellar, some are duds. But I’m not going to lie to you — I thought Captain America was a lot of fun. It was comic book-like, clean, and full of adventure. (Also available on iTunes.)

The Art of Pixar

The Art of Pixar is now shipping and it looks fantastic. It’s a thick, hardcover, book that’s jam packed with behind-the-scenes tours of every Pixar film to date. For the first time ever, this book has the complete color scripts for every film published, as well as samples of the visual development art. Moreover, it’s sure to be added to the short…

Planet Earth: Special Edition (Blu-ray and DVD)

A few winters ago Anna and I borrowed Planet Earths from a friend and watched the DVD series on our old, 20-inch CRT television. Even with such an old-fashioned setup like that the films were still striking and awe inspiring. After saving for a few Christmases, we have a Blu-ray setup now and I would love to re-visit these films. This new…

Art & Copy

Advertising is not a dirty word my friends. And this fun and entertaining (as well as award-winning) documentary is all about the power and importance of the creative professional. Designers and writers and photographers and editors are all vital contributors to a good marketing campaigns, and this film is all about them. If you have even the slightest interest in the creative…
